How to Care for Embroidered Apparel So It Lasts for Years

Good embroidery is built to last — but how you wash, dry and store a garment decides whether your logo or monogram still looks sharp years from now or fades and frays early. The good news: caring for embroidered apparel takes almost no extra effort once you know the simple rules.

Why embroidery needs a little care

Embroidery is made of dense, raised stitching. That is exactly what gives it its premium, textured look — and it is also why a few gentle habits go a long way. Heat, friction and rough handling are the main enemies; avoid those and your stitches will stay crisp for a very long time.

Washing: gentle is the rule

• Turn it inside out. This protects the stitches from rubbing against other clothes in the wash.
• Use cold or lukewarm water. Hot water can shrink fabric and stress the threads.
• Pick a mild detergent. Skip bleach and harsh stain removers, which can dull the colours.
• Choose a gentle cycle, or hand-wash delicate or heavily embroidered pieces.
• Wash with similar colours so nothing bleeds onto light thread.

Drying: skip the high heat

• Air-dry whenever you can. Lay flat or hang in shade — it is the gentlest option and keeps shapes intact.
• If you must tumble dry, use low heat and remove the garment while slightly damp.
• Avoid direct sunlight for long periods, which can fade both fabric and thread.

Ironing: protect the stitches

Never run a hot iron directly over embroidery — it can flatten the texture and scorch the thread. Instead, turn the garment inside out and press from the back, or place a thin cloth (a pressing cloth) over the design and iron gently on top.

Iron around and behind your embroidery, never straight onto it. The raised texture is the whole point — protect it.

Storage: keep it flat and dry

• Fold, do not cram. Give embroidered pieces room so the stitching does not get crushed.
• Keep them dry. Damp storage invites mildew, which stains thread.
• For special pieces, a breathable cotton garment bag keeps dust off without trapping moisture.
• Avoid sharp hangers or hooks near the design that could snag a stitch.
