Polyester or Rayon? Choosing the Right Embroidery Thread

Two embroidered logos can use the exact same design and colours and still look — and last — completely differently. The reason is almost always the thread. The two threads you will meet most often are polyester and rayon, and knowing when to use each is one of the simplest ways to lift the quality of any embroidered piece.

Here is how they compare, and how to choose with confidence.

The two threads at a glance

Both are fine, smooth, 40-weight threads that stitch beautifully. The difference is in character: polyester is the tough, colour-fast all-rounder, while rayon is the soft, high-sheen specialist.

Polyester: the everyday workhorse

  • Extremely durable. It resists abrasion and tension, so it holds up on garments that get worn and washed constantly.
  • Colour-fast. It shrugs off repeated washing and even harsh detergents without fading.
  • Low maintenance. Ideal for uniforms, workwear, caps and kidswear that need to survive real life.
  • Great value. You get long-lasting results without paying a premium.

Rayon: the one that shines

  • Beautiful sheen. Rayon has a soft, almost silk-like lustre that makes colours look rich and luxurious.
  • Smooth and supple. It lies flat and feels gentle, which is lovely on premium apparel and decorative pieces.
  • Photographs gorgeously. That gentle shine is why rayon is a favourite for fashion, monograms and display work.
  • Best for lighter-duty wear. It is a little less rugged than polyester, so it shines brightest where looks matter most.

Durability and washing

If a piece will be washed often or worn hard — think team polos, aprons, caps and bags — polyester is the safer choice. It keeps its colour and strength through wash after wash. Rayon can be washed too, but it prefers gentler care to protect that signature sheen.

Choose polyester when the piece has to survive. Choose rayon when the piece has to impress.

Colour, sheen and how it reads

Polyester has a clean, slightly matte-to-satin finish that looks crisp and professional. Rayon reflects more light, so the same colour can look deeper and more vibrant. On a corporate logo you usually want polyester's consistency; on a decorative monogram or a fashion piece, rayon's glow is hard to beat.

Which thread for which project

  • Corporate uniforms & workwear — polyester, for durability and colour-fastness.
  • Caps, bags & sportswear — polyester, built for daily use.
  • Premium apparel & fashion — rayon, for that luxurious sheen.
  • Monograms, gifts & display pieces — rayon, where the look is everything.
  • Kidswear — polyester, so it survives endless washing.

A simple rule of thumb

  1. Will it be washed a lot? Yes → polyester.
  2. Does it need to look luxurious up close? Yes → rayon.
  3. Is it a hard-working everyday item? Yes → polyester.
  4. Is it a special, decorative or premium piece? Yes → rayon.

Our take

For most branded apparel — the polos, caps, jackets and bags your customers and team will wear for years — we lean on premium polyester. It keeps colours sharp and survives everything daily life throws at it. When a piece is all about looking exquisite, we reach for rayon and let that sheen do the talking.
